In my experience, the -configure option simply does not work well in that
version of XFree86.

I think it may be somewhat improved in later versions, but still not enough
that I'd trust it.

I recommend using the xserver-xfree86 debconf interface to configure the X
server, for instance by running the following command as root:

  dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xfree86

I am not sure, however, that the Trident Cyber/BladeXP (the model of
display adapter you appear to have) is well-supported by XFree86 4.1.0.

I do know that, according to <URL:
http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status33.html#33 >, it is *supposed* to be
supported.

You would, therefore, choose the "trident" driver when prompted for your
X server driver.
