Bug#289078: unreadable bold chars in xbase-fonts -*-clean-medium-r-*-*-*-S-*-*-*-*-*-* fonts (where S <= 100)
Package: xfonts-base
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1
recently dist-upgraded my unstable system, and got new xfonts-base
package.
In xterm, bold characters in the font
-schumacher-clean-medium-r-normal--10-100-75-75-c-50-iso646.1991-irv
(which is in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/clR5x10.pcf.gz)
and many other fonts like it such as:
-*-clean-medium-r-*-*-*-100-*-*-*-*-*-* and
-*-clean-medium-r-*-*-*-80-*-*-*-*-*-* and
-*-clean-medium-r-*-*-*-60-*-*-*-*-*-*
have totally messed up bold characters (pixels missing from the characters,
more or less unreadable).
(I do have smooth font rendering on my laptop, but it's strange that only
bold is affected for these fonts.)
Im using debian Gnu/linux 2.4.23 custom compile with unstable apt.sources
(off http.us.debian.org) with
ii xfree86-common 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 X Window System (XFree86) infrastructure
ii xserver-common 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 files and utilities common to all X servers
ii xserver-xfree8 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 the XFree86 X server
ii xfs 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 X font server
ii xterm 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1 X terminal emulator
a snapshot of this poor rendering is
http://vinson.sizone.org/~math/busted-xterm-font.png
note the name <@math> in irssi there, is me, bolded, and unreadable.
(this font may look like crap in that snapshot, even the non bold, on a CRT,
but on a good laptop lcd, it is (was?) a great font in 1024x768 for people with
good eyesight and a penchant for a lot of text on screen at once!)
