Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.99.901.dfsg.1-2
Severity: serious

The xserver-xorg package in experimental can't be installed on a system
where nvidia-glx is also installed:

# dpkg -i ../xserver-xorg_6.8.99.901.dfsg.1-2.1_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 126792 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace xserver-xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-10 (using .../xserver-xorg_6=
=2E8.99.901.dfsg.1-2.1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement xserver-xorg ...
dpkg: error processing ../xserver-xorg_6.8.99.901.dfsg.1-2.1_i386.deb (--in=
stall):
 trying to overwrite /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so', which is=
 also in package nvidia-glx
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)

Please add the necessary conflicts or replaces or whatever happens to be
appropriate in this case.

While you're at it, this:

 Package: xdmx
 Version: 6.8.99.901.dfsg.1-2.1
 Section: x11
 Priority: optional
 Architecture: i386
 Depends: libc6 (>=3D 2.3.5-1), libfreetype6 (>=3D 2.1.5-1), libice6, libsm=
6, libxau6, libxaw8, libxdmcp6, libxext6, libxi6, libxmu6, libxp6, libxpm4,=
 libxrender1 (>> 1:0.9.0-1), libxt6, zlib1g (>=3D 1:1.2.1)
 Conflicts: xserver-xorg (<=3D 6.8.1-0.2)
 Replaces: xserver-xorg (<=3D 6.8.1-0.2)

should almost certainly be a Replaces *without* a Conflicts. The Conflicts
is only warranted if replacing the corresponding files from xserver-xorg
causes xserver-xorg to not work correctly in some way.

Robert, britney's version-tracking unawareness is unfortunately keeping -11 from transitionning to testing until manual intervention.

Also to Sven, please realize there's a reason Debian has (or hasn't) or a non-free section. If we really didn't care about anyone using non-free software, non-free wouldn't exist in the first place. Maybe 30% of installs may have an NVIDIA graphics card, and maybe 70% of installs are i386. Multiply that by the proportion of those in this case who use the non-free drivers, and you realize that if we do care about users even if they use some non-free software, dealing with this issue may save a Google session for some 10% of Sarge->Etch upgrades.

Steve, please reopen if you can reproduce this (or get similar issues) with current experimental X.org and unstable nvidia-glx. If this is the case, I'd suggest debian-x to open a new bug against nvidia-glx requesting specific changes, since Randall appears to consider his part done.
