possible kernel dependency bug?

Hello,

I just installed debian from the cd

Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r2 _Woody_ - Official i386 Binary-1 (20031201)

After installing, I used tasksel to choose a desktop environment and selected linux.csua.berkeley.edu as my mirror.

During install, it downloaded and installed X version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1.. I selected ati as my driver, as I have a radeon 7000.

X failed to start with an error that it could not load the radeon kernel module and that it could not find the mouse device.

After upgrading the 2.2 kernel from the cd to 2.4.27-10, X started up normally.

Is this an error in the dependencies of the X packages? If so, I can file it as a bug for you.

Thank you for all your work,

  michael cardenas
