today equipment was misidentified

I boot up, X comes up in 640x480. I scratch my head, do xdm restart,
and it comes up in proper 800x600. This must be because on the first
run, there must have been some electrons hiding in the hardware giving
some identification number for some year 1998 equipment that I don't
own, whereas on a second run this problem doesn't exist? Hardware issue?
