Micheal,
I manually changed driver from ati to radeon and it worked ok. I also enabled
all modules except xtt and it still worked. Previously I had not put in all
modules as some did not load and others were not recommended for the
ati/radeon as per xfree/ati websites guides. I also get the 1024x768 Pixel
(347x260mm) format to load ( very nice, just like old Caldera set up on old
machine with Tseng card ) rather than the 800x600.
I was told ??gears?? application was a way of checking 3D accelleration but
haven't found it yet.
If dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 is used, the radeon driver is ***not***
listed, only ati, so only your manual method of driver specification works.

ok - nice - so i have someone to confirm that my workaround around ATI
  driver autodection works.

Micheal,
 Thanks/that's ok.
I got:
6249 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1249.800 FPS
7742 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1548.400 FPS
7742 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1548.400 FPS
7741 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1548.200 FPS
 Is that good/ok/so-so?
