Thanks for testing this.  While the driver is trying to drive the monitor
that way, could you switch to a VC and and determine what mode the X server
*thinks* it's using for the monitor?

E.g.:

$ DISPLAY=:0 xvidtune -show

If the numbers are right in the output from xvidtune, what we might have is
a math error of some sort in the s3 driver.
