It might be interesting to synthesize caps lock key press and release events and see if the lag happens that way. That would rule out bizarre behavior at the hardware level. (Don't be *too* skeptical of that -- Macintosh laptops have had some pretty creative brain damage in the caps lock problem over the years.) -- G.
