I just found out that the colors can be changed in the resources. It appears  
that the man pages are outdated. The following lines in Xresources set  
everything to, for example, black.

XClock*secondColor:             black
XClock*minuteColor:             black
XClock*hourColor:               black
XClock*minorColor:              black
XClock*majorColor:              black
