I can verify that it was the updated X server that caused the problem.
With the same kernel, kernel DRM module, and r128_dri.so that I was
previously using, and just a new xserver-xfree86 package, I get
lockups.

I'm going to grab 4.2.1-16 off of snapshot.debian.net and try that for
a while.
