It's highly annoying to have to install things like defoma and now various fonts,
and even many of the rendering related libraries from stuff that depends
on xlibs for one reason or another. (I try to avoid them, but one or
two packages always manage to sneak in)
Mainly I run a server system, and try to keep all the extra X crap off
it as much as posisble. ;) But certain things liek GD like it (although
the noxpm can be used most of the time)
THis may be a wishlist item, but I just noticed a lot of extra X related
stuff come down the pipe today that wasn't there before.

xlibs does not depend on defoma or any font packages.
None of the packages xlibs now depends on depend on defoma or any font
packages, either.

Whatever extra stuff "came down the pike" was either due to the split of
the xlibs package, or was hauled in by other packages you upgraded.

Please review the package changelog, and the decription of the xlibs
package (dpkg -s xlibs) to understand why no more is on your system
than used to be due to xlibs.
