Bug#228665: xserver-xfree86: [mouse] SendCoreEvents + ServerLayout entry leads to doubled events

Oh, I see; I didn't realize this option even existed, because the
kernel config (in 2.6.1) doesn't even show it unless CONFIG_EMBEDDED
is set. That's a very stupid default.

$ zgrep MOUSEDEV_PSAUX /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_PSAUX=y

So by removing "SendCoreEvents" from my XF86Config, I effectively
disabled the use of /dev/input/mice completely, and am now only seeing
the mirrored events from /dev/psaux.

Well, at least you'll know why when you start seeing a bunch of bug
reports where people upgraded to 2.6 and their mouse doubled in speed.
