Cool. You just pointed me to a workaround for the problem ;-)If an external CRT is attached at boot time, the notebook automagically disables it's internal LCD screen and uses the CRT only. This is the setup that doesn't show video.
If I boot up without CRT attached, Xvideo works for the LCD head (and on the CRT if it is attached later).
