Right, three hours usage of Gnome and X.org (same thing observed on
XFree86) with the two options XaaNoPixmapCache and XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps
set has resulted in 'ps waux' telling me about X that it is taking up
127 MiB in the RSS section and in total 157 MiB. At the same time
xrestop claims there are 22 clients, Pixmaps 11660K, Other 459K and All
12120K. Biggest client usage is 3756 KiB according to xrestop.

Running 'pmap' on the PID of the X server gives me one line that stands
out like a sore thumb,
08794000 106412K rw--- [ anon ]

If there was a way to track what processes are using that part of the X
server, perhaps I could then find out exactly what program it is that is
allocating memory and not freeing it.

For the time being, I will avoid using Gnome as that seems to be what is
aggravating the issue.

Regards,
