Well, that's completely bizarre.

I'm not having this problem, and neither is anyone else I know or have
heard of.

Can you reproduce this problem in a bare-bones X environment?

E.g.,

# startx $(which x-terminal-emulator) -- :1

(If no X server is running at DISPLAY=:0, you can leave off the "-- :1"
part).

This will launch the X server running a lone terminal client with no window
manager.  Try to reproduce the behavior from there.
