I don't get many bug reports about mouse acceleration -- in fact, yours is
the first I can recall -- so I suspect that you are in a minority in
feeling that the default mouse acceleration parameters "suck".

That, or something unusual is going on in your particular configuration.

When you first launch the X server, what mouse acceleration is reported?

You can find out by running "xset q".  For example, I get:

Pointer Control:
  acceleration:  20/10    threshold:  4

...which works satisfactorily for me.
