Thanks for your reply, perhaps I should have included more detail.  I 
receive the 'Maximum number of clients reached' message after a few days 
even if I only have a couple of windows open.  It's as if the client 
resources aren't being freed when X clients are killed, so after a few 
days of use  (opening and closing applications) I run out.  Is this a 
known issue?  Are we talking about the same thing?  It's not as if I 
have 100 windows open when this happens.

If I'm barking up the wrong tree, please ignore.  And thanks for your 
work on Debian.

No, of course not.  Please let me know if I should include more detail. 
 Apps I most commonly use are Aterm, Firefox and Thunderbird.  I can 
provide some xlsclients and xwininfo outputs if that's helpful.
