Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-6
Severity: normal

Using a Radeon 7500, I get insta-hang running dri applications.

Eg, start X server with glx etc. enabled, run glxinfo (direct rendering
enabled).

Run glxgears - black window appears, system totally hangs. Even sysrq
does nothing at all.

This is using the radeon driver in the 2.4.20 kernel.

I've tried a number of configurations and fiddling factors, including:
* Changing AGPMode in config and AGP speed in BIOS
* Turning on/off agp fast writes
* Different screen depths

In the past I also tried fiddling with the AGPSize and VideoRam options.

I seem to recall getting the card working once to the point where it was
able to run glxgears a bit and run tuxracer for up to about 30 seconds
before it hung the system with some of the DRI project driver builds,
but it's never had functional 3D in X so far.

I saw a report once of a possible AGP bug with the ALI motherboards, so
I suspect this may be related. Here is lspci:

The motherboard is an ASUS A7A.

The computer was stable with an MGA G400 and with the proprietary nvidia
drivers (well, about as stable as those ever are). This Radeon 7500
card was functional in a windows machine using a different motherboard.

I don't expect this is going to be fixed or anything, but it seems
useful to report it in case anyone else has the problem. :-)

# ServerLayout sections.
# **********************************************************************

# Any number of ServerLayout sections may be present. Each describes
# the way multiple screens are organised. A specific ServerLayout
# section may be specified from the X server command line with the
# "-layout" option. In the absence of this, the first section is used.
# When now ServerLayout section is present, the first Screen section
# is used alone.

Section "ServerLayout"

# The Identifier line must be present
    Identifier "Simple Layout"

# Each Screen line specifies a Screen section name, and optionally
# the relative position of other screens. The four names after
# primary screen name are the screens to the top, bottom, left and right
# of the primary screen. In this example, screen 2 is located to the
# right of screen 1.

    Screen "Screen 1"

# Each InputDevice line specifies an InputDevice section name and
# optionally some options to specify the way the device is to be
# used. Those options include "CorePointer", "CoreKeyboard" and
# "SendCoreEvents".

    InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer"
    InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
