Hello,

I recently ran the 'apt-get update' then apt-get upgrade' and now my Xserver
crashes upon startup.

I then moved the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.debconf-backup back to
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and got the same results. I then commented out the
BusID "PCI:1:0:0" in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 same results.

I then de-installed XFree86 and re-installed, same results.

Help!

I am running kernel 2.4.20 and XFree86 4.1.0.1 on an HP/Compaq Evo N610c
laptop.

CPU = Mobile Intel Pentium 4 -  2 Ghz
RAM = 512 Mb

Here is the output of lspci, the contents of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and the
contents of /var/log/XFree86.0.log

> ii  xserver-xfree8 4.1.0-16woody1 the XFree86 X server

Thanks for following up.

As I said in the message to which you replied:

  The ATI Radeon Mobility M6 is not recognized or support[ed] by XFree86
  4.1.0, as the above suggests.

  If your X server was working before, it was likely because you had
  overlaid it with some more recent version -- probably outside the
  confines of the Debian package system.

The Radeon Mobility M6 is supported by the version of XFree86 in Debian
unstable ("sid") and possibly the version in Debian testing ("sarge") as
well.

I am closing this report, as the hardware in question is supported by
more recent versions of the packages.

There are unofficial backports of more recent Debian XFree86 packages to
woody, which you may want to check out.

You can read more about that here:

  http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2004/05/msg00224.html

Closing this report.
