I'm assuming you're using xdm or something like that.  With startx/fwvm,
the app-defaults for xterm appear on my machine as black-on-white.

(I was running gdm recently for a while, but disabled that since the two
versions of gnome - on Debian and Redhat - insist on trashing the other's
desktop settings).
