I am confused. I use "en_US.UTF-8" for my LC_CTYPE myself, have done so for well over a year (maybe two by now) and have never noticed any problems. The GNU C library uses "fuzzy matching" for codeset comparison and I don't know that locale -a purports to advertise any sort of canonical list for purposes outside glibc's own implementation.
