Bug#238540: xserver-xfree86: Machine hangs while switching from X to VC

I had been noticing this for a while and now, it has become so difficult
to even use the computer.
Here is the problem: whenever I start X, and switch to VC while X is loading
the machine hangs, and I have to do a hard reboot. I upgraded to Xfree86 4.3
in the unstable and still the problem exists. Then I thought it is the problem
with GNOME and uninstalled GNOME, but the problem still persists. Note that
thie phenomenon is random, and does not occur all the time, but the frequency
has increased very much now a days, that I am afraid to start X.
The issue has existed through kernel versions 2.4.18 to 2.6.3 and XFree86
4.1 to current debian unstable versions (4.3). The relevant information is
attached.
H/W:
Graphics card is ATI Rage128Pro.
CPU is AMD Duron 750MHz.
software:
XFree86 - 4.3.0-2
kernel - 2.6.3
