Probably; that sounds like the right direction for things to head.

Yes; there's still a need for something like AC_PATH_X_LIBS and
AC_PATH_X_INCLUDES.

It sounds utterly reasonable to me.

Is there anyone watching this conversation who'd like to help make this
happen?  I'm happy to use xrender as a guinea pig and proof-of-concept.

I feel it's important to get this resolved in time for the sarge
release.
