Package: libxext6
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: important

Hi,

I did apt-get install x-window-system-core/unstable but during install I got
these errors:

Selecting previously deselected package libxext6.
(Reading database ... 91190 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking libxext6 (from .../libxext6_4.3.0-2_i386.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libxext6_4.3.0-2_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6.4', which is also in package xlibs
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Preparing to replace xlibmesa-gl-dev 4.2.1-11 (using .../xlibmesa-gl-dev_4.3.0-2_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement xlibmesa-gl-dev ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/libxext6_4.3.0-2_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

It seems libxext6 should pre-depend on xlibs (>= 4.3.0-2), because xlibs
version 4.3.0-0pre1v1 still has file /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6.4

Btw, why x-window-system-core package dependancies arent versioned ? I'm
installing x-window-system-core version 4.3.0-2 but lots of dependant
packages (for example xserver-xfree86) aren't updated in this way. It
seems, that x-window-system-core version 4.3.0-2 should depend on other
X system packages the same version, for example on xserver-xfree86 version
4.3.0-2
Should I report another bug about this ?

Upgrades from experimental are not supported.

When you installed that experimental package, you should have seen the
following debconf message:

You are using an experimental version of XFree86 packages for Debian. Ple=
ase
do not file bugs with the Debian Bug Tracking System against this version =
of
the packages, since they have not been released to the Debian distribution
 yet.
 .
If you experience problems with these packages or would like to submit
patches, please send mail to the Debian X mailing list. You can read more
about this mailing list on the World Wide Web:
   http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/
 .
If you do not want to be running experimental X packages, you need to do t=
wo
 things:
   1) Ensure that you do not have experimental package repositiories in
      your /etc/apt/sources.list file;
   2) Instruct apt to downgrade XFree86 to an appropriate released version;
you can do this by appending a package suite name to the package name
      with "apt-get" -- for example:
        apt-get install xfree86-common/unstable
     or
        apt-get install xfree86-common/stable
You may need to specify downgrades for several packages.

You'll need to install some of the packages with "dpkg -i --force-overwrite=
".

> Btw, why x-window-system-core package dependancies arent versioned ?

Because they don't have to be.

No. A package frontend (like apt-get or aptitude) is how systems get
upgraded in Debian, not by overloading packaging dependencies (which are
supposed to specify "hard requirements") with upgrade hints.

Closing this report.
