I think you answered your own question.  There's no reason for there to
be One True Display Manager.  Different strokes for different folks.
xdm is largely a sample implementation of how to do a window manager.
While it *could* support an autologin feature, there's not really a
compelling reason for it to do so when alternatives exist.

I am tagging this bug wontfix, as I have no intention of implementing
the requested feature myself.  However, if someone wants to write a
patch to implement this functionality, I'll give it consideration.

If I were to hack on xdm myself, there are other features that would
take higher priority.

In the meantime, I suggest you try out a different display manager.  wdm
and kdm are both very similar to xdm from a configuration standpoint.
gdm is a bit different, and uses a Windows .INI-style configuration
format.
