It's not the metapackage's job to enforce a particular version of its dependencies to be installed I agree, though, that it is unpleasant to try to upgrade every package to the version in experimental manually. That's what apt pinning is for. You can add the following to your apt preferences file (/etc/apt/preferences): Package: * Pin: release a=xfree86 Pin-Priority: 1002 Please let me know if this solution satisfies your needs. -- G.
