Actually, yes.  The problem most likely lies in the XKB configuration
data.

Actually when I got home I checked and realized I use xfree86/pc104/us
with ctrl:nocaps on my Apple Blue&White G3.  (I use a USB PC keyboard
with it.)

When I try to enable the "nodeadkeys" variant, I get an error:

[0] branden@redwald:/tmp/branden % setxkbmap -variant nodeadkeys
Error loading new keyboard description

It appears that this combination just flat out isn't supported.
