Thanks for getting back to me.  I see something that might be the
problem:

If you're not using the kernel's framebuffer console feature, this
"UseFBDev" line is probably the cause of your trouble.

The debconf configuration in the woody XFree86 packages frequently
guesses the wrong default for this UseFBDev parameter.

If you have no /proc/fb file or if it is empty ("cat /proc/fb"), then
you should definitely run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" as root and
change the answer to the question to decline it.

Please let me know what you find out.  This bug report is starting to
look like a configuration error.
