I just found out that the Luxi fonts are in fact available (and
installed) also as Type1 fonts, not only as TTF. So all crashing fonts
are Type1. It seems your known bug is at work here. Is there a Debian
bug report for this one?


In short:

Avantgarde, Free Paladin (gsfonts), Courier, Luxi_{Mono,Serif}
(t1-xfree86-nonfree) all cause a crash of the X server.

Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana (TTFs) don't crash the X server (a lot
of swapping though, and xfd exits)

xfd -fn '-*-avantgarde-*-*-*-*-*-1200000-*-*-*-*-*-*'


X configuration:

Modules "type1" and "freetype", no dedicated font server (neither xfs
nor xfstt); "nvidia" closed-source binary driver ("nv" doesn't fix it
either).
