Hi,

here is an excerpt from the XFree docs in file README.fonts section 2.2.4:

>For best results, scalable fonts should appear in the font path before the
>bitmap fonts; this way, the server will prefer bitmap fonts to scalable fonts
>when an exact match is possible, but will avoid scaling bitmap fonts when a
>scalable font can be used. (The `:unscaled' hack, while still supported,
>should no longer be necessary in XFree86 4.0 and later.)

dexconf does not comply with this advice:
 - it uses the :unscaled "hack"
 - scalable fonts appear *after* bitmap fonts

Therefore I suggest that dexconf reorders the FontPath lines when writing the
XF86Config-4 file.

This bug was fixed back in 4.2.1-6:

xfree86 (4.2.1-6) unstable; urgency=3Dmedium
[...]
  * debian/local/dexconf: reorder font path components to follow advice
    given in README.fonts document; move scalable font directories to top o=
f list,
    and, for 4.x XF86Config files, remove ":unscaled" lines since they are =
not
    needed by XFree86 4.0 and later. Also, add CID font path to 4.x XF86Co=
nfig
    files for consistency with 3.x font path configuration.
[...]

You'll note, however, that putting scalable fonts ahead of bitmapped
ones, contrary to README.fonts, actually made fonts *uglier* for many
users instead of more attractive.

See, for example:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=3D199111

Because I suspect the advice in README.fonts is actually correct when
one has non-free fonts installed, what would be preferable than the
status quo is for font packages to register the paths they use, with an
associated user-configurable priority which dexconf will then respect;
<URL: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=3D202096 >
describes this approach in slightly more detail.

Closing this report.
