Version: 4.1.0-16
Severity: wishlist

The fact that xfree86 4 doesn't turn on backing store by default seems
to frequently cause puzzlement. If one knows how, one can of course
enable it by adding 'Option "backing_store"' to the Screen section of
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4. However, one has to either make this addition
every time dexconf is run, or add a separate Screen section outside
the part of XF86Config-4 managed by dexconf. This seems a bit
inelegant since the Screen section is rather large and ungainly.

I know that dexconf 'is not a very ambitious tool', but it's actually
quite nice. Would it be reasonable to consider adding a question about
backing store, to make it even nicer?

Thanks.

The X server's. According to Keith Packard, "[the] current BS
implementation is not protocol compliant, and is per-window instead of
  per-heirarchy."

I therefore have no plans to support a backing store option in the
XFree86 X server debconf templates.

Of course, the option is still available for those who choose to use it.
