Bug#179635: trying to overwrite ...X11/app-defaults

dpkg -l xterm

||/ Name           Version        Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
ii xterm 3.3.6-11 X terminal emulator

dpkg -S usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults

dialdcost: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/Xdialdcost
groff: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/GXditview
xterm, dialdcost, xmh, playmidi, groff, gv:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults
xterm: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm
xmh: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/Xmh
playmidi: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XPlaymidi
xterm: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm-color
gv: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/GV

Hmm. The current version of xterm appears to be 4.2.1-5.

Perhaps the rules for app-defaults has changed in the past year or
two? I have not updated my version of xterm since I first installed,
unless it has upgraded automatically.

My apologies if I have entered a bogus bug.

How must I fix my system so these dependencies resolve themselves?
Should I attempt something such as:

  apt-get dist-upgrade

Thank you for your time, expertise, and patience.
