Bug#179660: xlibmesa3: bzflag freezes up X completely at random times

Subject: xlibmesa3: bzflag freezes up X completely at random times
Package: xlibmesa3
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: normal

Hello,

I have a somewhat difficult to reproduce bug, so I tried to gather more info before reporting.

While running bzflag (all versions) I experience lockups of my screen after random times. Sometimes it happens after seconds, sometimes after hours. Usually you can play for a long time. It is not possible to switch to another console anymore. The only way to get to the computer is through network (ssh). Killing bzflag or restarting the X server does not bring back the computer. The screen and keyboard stay unresponsive. Only way to bring back X is a reboot.

I am running debian testing, but it doesn't seem to be debian specific. (also reported to happen on Mandrake)

I have been debugging bzflag, and it seems that the main thread, which contain the graphics code stops at the crash at different places. I think this is because something asynchronous (opengl?) causes it to freeze up. It is probably not the sound thread, since this keeps running after the freeze.

People have seen the same behaviour with other linux games. I myself once with vegastrike.

I have a suspicion that it is caused by the opengl implementation on linux. (It also doesn't happen on windows)

There is a lengthy discussion about this and symptons of it on (warning: there are some side discussion about different bugs and issues):
http://bzbb.homelinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=105

And some on:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=780343&forum_id=9554

I am out of idea's to find out and fix myself what is causing this. I would be happy to search further if I can get some hints on how to do that.

Cheers,
Remco.
