To try just the new 3D driver, extract i810_dri.so from the xlibmesa4-gl
deb to somewhere and do

LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/path/to/somewhere LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo (to
check that the new driver is actually used and direct rendering works
with it)

LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/path/to/somewhere glxgears

If the problem persists (or direct rendering doesn't work with just the
new 3D driver), you'd have to try the new 2D driver and possibly DRM as
well, which would be slightly more complicated.
