The problem is much more likely due to the proprietary nvidia drivers.

xserver-xfree86-dbg doesn't work with proprietary drivers, so you'd have
to use some tricks with the normal, modular server, but it will likely
point to the nvidia driver anyway, at which point only nVidia can do
anything.
