After further searching on the net I seem to have found a workaround: Starting an application with LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/tls/libGL.so.1.0.4496 [app] will load it, seemingly without problems.So I guess this is an incompatibility issue between the NVidia drivers and one of the recent system upgrades...
