Bug#213286: xfonts-base: fails to produce ISO 8859-1 font which can be loaded into emacs

Package: xfonts-base
Version: 4.2.1-11
Severity: important

After updating x-fonts a few days ago, no usable latin-1 fonts can be loaded into emacs any more.
Furtermore, many system fonts are ugly, or scale badly. This affects for example evolution, galeon, and almost any other x-program.

See for example the following:

marc@chiron:~$ emacs .bashrc
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font

marc@chiron:~$ emacs --version
GNU Emacs 21.2.1
