Hello,
I've installed two X11 terminals with fonts taken from a xfs server with
Debian (one Woody, one unstable). There I found two things in packaging
which should be changed in my opinion.
1.) xkbcomp shouldn't be in xbase-clients, as it is needed for X11 to work
right (X keyboard extension). I think it should go to xserver-common or
xserver-xfree86. Without it, you cannot even login on a SparcStation 10 via
xdm, as the return key and many others don't work.
2.) fonts shouldn't be in x-windows-core-system, as it is the minimal
system. they should go to x-windows-core or only be a recommendation or
something. So it would be easier to set up a minimal X11 terminal.

With kind regards
	Torsten Knodt

I am afraid I do not agree.

xkbcomp is in xbase-clients because it has shared library dependencies
on the X libraries. As you know there's no particular reason an X
terminal needs to have any X libraries installed.

% ldd /usr/bin/X11/xkbcomp
        libXext.so.6 =3D> /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x0ffce000)
        libX11.so.6 =3D> /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x0fed5000)
        libc.so.6 =3D> /lib/libc.so.6 (0x0fd7c000)
        libdl.so.2 =3D> /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x0fd59000)
        /lib/ld.so.1 =3D> /lib/ld.so.1 (0x30000000)

You can pre-generate an X server keymap for an X terminal. See the
"-xkbmap" option documented in the Xserver(1) manual page.

I disagree.  I created the x-window-system-core pseudopackage
specifically for the benefit of people who don't know what you do.

People setting up minimal X terminals are in a minority relative to
desktop-type users who run their X clients and X server on the same
machine. Therefore I have deliberately tailored the x-window-system and
x-window-system-core convenience packages to their needs.

Thanks for taking the time to think about these issues, though.

Closing this report.
