I cannot locate any changes to the xftcache or libXft (version 1) code
that took place between 4.2.1-3 and 4.2.1-6.

Can you still reproduce this problem? xbase-clients does not depend on
libxft2; what happens if you remove the libxft2 package?

The current version of xbase-clients in Debian testing is 4.2.1-11.
