I'm not sure what the problem is (and preinst scripts are notoriously
difficult to troubleshoot), but I'm adding some more defensive logic to
the xserver-common preinst script in 4.2.1-12, and hopefully that will
resolve the problem.

In the meantime, you might try purging and reinstalling xserver-common.

# dpkg -P --force-depends xserver-common
# apt-get -f install

Please let me know if that works (or doesn't).
