Bug#203283: further experiments with S3/TrioV64+ etc.

The log file appended below resulted from startx after I
made a few changes to XF86Config-4 in order to get past what
seemed to be a mouse problem, and installed a more recent
kernel (not an easy task). I believe that both the X
server and the kernel are the most recent available
through apt.

Externally, the screen simply goes dark and no response
is observed from the keyboard or the mouse. In looking
through the log, I observe objections to 1024x768 pixels,
but this is the normal setting of the monitor and video board
(as one can observe in the specs previously sent along) and
has worked properly in the past.

Although the monitor, keyboard and mouse become inert,
the rest of the system continues to operate. In order
to escape from the situation without rebooting, I now have
a background script that times out after a few minutes and
then finds and kills all the processes begun by startx using
a series of kill values. Hopefully, this means the log is
flushed to disk before the processes terminate.
