Bug#203576: xserver-common: Signal 11 during heavy swapin during shutdown of heavy swapout Mozilla multiversion processes

Package: xserver-common
Version: 4.1.0-16
Severity: important

Strange signal 11 (in XFree86 v4.1.0.1 vender release 6510)

I was trying to get rid of an unnecessary Java process running with
Mozilla, so I did:

  killall java_vm

Unfortunately, Mozilla was stupid and decided to freak out and give
up, even though it had no use for Java at that point, taking away
about 30 pages I was looking at all managed by one process (SPOF)
instead of cloning exlusive processes which shared resources, and as a
result, started trying to free 100s of megabytes of bloated memory
use, most in swap. This was after I was trying to load a Java program
in a more recent and less trustable Mozilla program in order to look
at some USGS data.

I then tried to look at the version number of the more recent Mozilla
(trying to find the button for the "pull-down-menu" with "About" in
it, probably during the lengthy shutdown of the older Mozilla version
resources. Before I could even see what place to press with a button
for that, I then received the following error in X:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".
Please report problems to submit@bugs.debian.org.
-------------------

Both Mozillas were installed by me; the first one was compiled, most
likely from you or from a release of Netscape's. The second one is a
binary.

The last time I had Signal 11 problems, I was incorrectly told it was
a hardware problem. Since I had a Dell, I knew they were wrong. It
took me a year and a half, and finally it was admitted by the GCC
programmers that Sig11 was in fact a compiler bug in GCC, and it was
not my hardware. This same bug has been famous since then, since
people are still trying to find ways to fix and get around it. It was
not my fault that people did not believe me, and it took a lot of work
to get people to realize it was not me. I do not accept stock answers
about Sig11 being a hardware problem with me. In my strong
experience, Sig11 is MOST LIKELY A SOFTWARE BUG.
