Bug#196718: Problem solved ?

Definitely looks like a driver acceleration issue to me - if Option
"NoAccel" works around the problem, you could try isolating the
offending acceleration primitive using the "XaaNo..." options.

Have you verified this isn't any of the other bugs reported about the
savage driver?

I searched both the Debian bugreports and the XFree86 Bugzilla pages, but did not
find anything.

The computer is four years old, the card was not "rocket sience" when I bought it (and have been working faultlessly under all OSes I have tried so far), so I didn't look for any driver problems in the first place. But putting the option "NoAccel" on the line following the option "UseFBDev" did the trick, the screen is stable!

Why this is happening is "a bit" strange, specially since the graphics have worked faultlessly in all versions of SuSE, ManDrake and RedHat that have been released the last four years... It is also working 100% in SkoleLinux, a distro based on Debian.

This bug came after a upgrade, so I beleve it was introduced then.

I hope it is solved by adding the option you gave, but I do not have any idea of why... It did not exist in XFree 3.3 - 4.3 on other distros (and did not exist in the 4.x I build
in the Trustix distro on this computer last summer).
