Bug#196718: Problem partly fixed
The problem is partly fixed, but there are some programs that still
trigger this (or a similar) bug. I am filing this problems as bug
#196718 since it started as this bug in Enlightenment, but have moved
over to KDE and Gnome after the bugfix.
I file this report with doubt, because of the flames I recieved as a
result of the first report, but this bug is too serious to not notice.
All programs fail on different occations, but with the same result.
This bug was first identified after upgrading X (see the other
comments on this bug), but a recent upgrade of X have narrowed the
failing programs to the four below (at least those where the ones I am
struggling with currently)
The programs failing now is:
- Mozilla / apache / php4
- Gaim
- KNode
- The entire Enlightenment interface
The bug is identified by:
- The desktop get the same "granulated" style as found in the default
XDM login interface ( series of white and black dots ).
- The desktop locks for some time, and all programs using graphical
interface locks as well.
- When the desktop unlocks, the graphical elements on it is
functioning as if nothing have happened, and the elements that is
"behind" the granulated surface becomes visible when I update the
desktop (in KDE or Gnome: Switch from one desktop to another).
- The programs not running under X (like DHCPD, Tomcat and Apache) run
as usual when the desktop is locked. I am able to access the
computer via ssh. This indicate that only the graphical desktop is
involved.
- The failing programs run under different graphical interfaces: KDE,
Gnome and Enlightenment. The only similarity I have found reasomable
is that the all run under Xfree86.
The bug is triggered by:
- Mozilla / apache / php4:
Change desktop settings in phpgroupware when running phpgroupware at
the same computer as the test is performed om
- Gaim:
Opening Gaim, entering the "settings" menu (after login)
- KNode:
Re - sort a column at a newsgroup
- Enlightenment:
Start the interface, it crashes instantly. For Enlightenments sake,
X have to be restarted (CTRL+ALT+BCKSP) after login, it crashes
right after the two "curtains" have opened.
The bugs were reproduced eight times the 12. and 13. june 2003 prior
to this bugreport
