Bug#196220: xfree86-common: problem with comma-seperated list of fonts
Package: xfree86-common
Version: 4.1.0-16
Severity: normal
If I try to run the program 'grok' (cf. package xmbase-grok) I get the following error message:
bash-2.05a$ grok
bash-2.05a$ grok: can't load font "-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso8859-1,-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-70-iso8859-1=BOLD,-adobe-helvetica-medium-o-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso8859-1=ITALIC"
This bug has already been reported as bug #85055 for the package xmbase-grok,
and has subsequently been closed unresolved because the package xmbase-grok is
orphaned. I would like to suggest to reopen the bug as problem of the X server
for the following reason:
My desktop computer runs Debian, my notebook RedHat Linux. If I start 'grok'
locally on my RedHat system, it works fine. But if I connect from my Debian
box to my RedHat notebook using 'ssh -X' and then remotely start 'grok',
hence running it on my Debian X server, I get the above mentioned error
message. Hence, the error appears, when grok is run on a Debian X server,
and does not appear, when grok is run on a RedHat X server, no matter
whether the grok binary runs on a Deian or a RedHat box.
IMHO, this suggests, that the reason for the error is a subtle difference
between RedHat's and Debian's XFree86 packages.
I hope these informations help you to investigate the matter. (Please note
that you don't need a RedHat box. Just install the xmbase-grok package and
run grok to reproduce the error.)
In case you need further information please ask me. (Sorry for not being able
to include everything necessary, but I am not an experienced Debian user.)
And TIA for looking at the problem, I would very much appreciate any help
with it.
Cheers,
Simon
