It's likely that the conffile /etc/X11/fonts/misc/xfonts-base.alias was
deleted, and dpkg is attempting to respect what it perceived to be your
desire that the file remain deleted.

Try re-installing the xfonts-base package with the "--force-confmiss"
option passed to dpkg.

Also, the subject of your bug report confuses me.  "/etc/X11/fonts/misc"
is a directory, not a file.
