Bug#172693: SIGILL in XFree86 (appears DPMS-related)

I appear to have independently discovered this problem.

My laptop (ThinkPad A21p) is running Debian 3.0-stable. The Linux
kernel is a custom package made from 2.4.18 sources, but everything
else is "stock," including the X server (xserver-xfree86 4.1.0-16).
I'm using the "vesa" driver, but my video controller shows up as an
ATI "Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x."

Is there a Debianly Correct way in which to get a copy of the X server
with non-stripped libraries, so that I can produce a backtraceable
core dump? I'd be happy to help out with this, but I'm relatively new
to Debian as an OS distribution.

Thanks,
Lucas
