You need to recompile the nvidia kernel module. You can't modprobe it because it isn't there.
But this is exactly what i did. I removed allthe nvidia packages and installed them new with apt-get install ( i did this more than once). Then i read the readme in /usr/share/doc/nvidia* and installed it like it was written there.....
