bug report: exiting X trashes display or hangs kernel

Whenever I exit X11 or switch to a text mode virtual console, one of
two things happens.

1. The console switches to text mode, but all the characters are
garbage. It's as if the character bitmaps had been overwritten.
Here's a photo that shows how it looks.

	http://www.jogger-egg.com/kbob/images/badchars.jpg

2. The system hangs hard. Doesn't respond to ping or anything else
   (except the RESET button).

The configuration is:

	Debian testing (sarge)
	x86 architecture
XFree86 4.2.1-6 (but I've seen this bug in earlier 4.x.x releases)
Kernel 2.4.20-1 from the Debian archive (not one I compiled myself)
Number Nine Revolution 4 video card
SGI 1600SW flat panel monitor, 1600x1024x24 resolution

I've attached some things.

	/var/log/XFree86.0.log
	/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
	dmesg output
	lspci output

If this is not the right place to submit this bug, please let me know.
If I can provide any more info or run any experiments, I'll be happy
to.

Thanks.
