Bug#190270: xserver brings up black screen

Package: xserver-xfree86 and xfree86-common
Version: 4.2.1-6

After doing an 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to unstable, the new xfree86 packages
wreaked havoc on my system. After restarting gdm the video got flaky. I had
horizontal bands (very thin and multicolored) appearing anytime part of the
screen was redrawn. After rebooting the entire system I got nothing but a black
login screen with a mouse pointer (outlined in white) and some artifacts at the
top of the screen. I downgraded back down to testing (version 4.2.1-3) and
everything works fine now.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 3.0/unstable, kernel 2.4.20 (custom),
libc6 2.1.3-17, and all other xfree86 related packages are version 4.2.1-6

This is the info on my video card from 'lspci -vv'
